Case Study: Photographing the Katara Mosque: Patterns, Light, and Architectural Details
Located in the heart of Katara Cultural Village in Doha, the Katara Mosque is one of Qatar’s most visually striking landmarks.
Designed by renowned Turkish architect Zeynep Fadıllıoğlu, its Persian and Turkish mosaic tiles, enamel details, and golden calligraphy create an intricate canvas of patterns and textures.
For this personal project, I focused on exploring how light, materials, and geometry interact to shape the mosque’s presence.

Mosaic Patterns & Textures
The first thing that drew my attention was the depth of the mosaic work.
The bold colors, geometric symmetry, and layered textures reveal endless photographic possibilities.

I approached this shot with a 50mm lens to preserve detail without distortion, letting the pattern fill the frame and guide the viewer’s eye naturally.
Architectural Calligraphy & Materiality
This section of the mosque blends ceramic tiles with panels of golden calligraphy, creating a striking visual contrast.
Photographing it required balancing highlights and shadows to maintain color accuracy.
I captured this image slightly off-center to emphasize depth and avoid flattening the three-dimensional texture of the facade.

Atmosphere & Light
Light defines the mood of architectural photography. This image was taken in the late afternoon, when the sun created a soft flare across the tiled surface.
The warm tones of the stone contrast beautifully with the cooler blues of the mosaics, showing how the building shifts character throughout the day.
